September 8, 2015

September 2015 – the month when everything is happening! Children in the UK go back to school, the pope will speak to the US Congress, I turn 49, and the UN is pushing the New World Order onto us (well, at least according to certain scare-mongering websites…).

Personally, I wouldn’t mind a new world order, and that is exactly what Jesus has promised us – it’s called the Kingdom of God. Sometimes it seems almost invisible, hidden away amongst the many different renewal movements; sometimes it seems like the church has managed to accidentally smother it with theological and religious clap-trap; but fear not! Just like yeast worked into a batch of dough, the Kingdom of God is among us. Wherever people share the love of Jesus, wherever the church of God fights injustice and unbelief, the King is there with us – and where Jesus is, there his Kingdom is as well. One day he will come back to get rid of all sin, and then he will establish his eternal Kingdom, where all who have given him their lives will live forever in the presence of God.

But until then, we have a job to do. As the church of Jesus, we have one single purpose: to make disciples. All of us are called to be disciples, and all of us are called to be involved in making new disciples. Everything we do as a church ultimately has to serve that purpose.

This September, we’re changing one of our gatherings. Instead of a weekly Wednesday meeting, we’re starting “The Upper Room”, a monthly gathering (the third Wednesday, starting the 16th September) for prayer, Bible study, discussion, DVDs, testimonies – all meant to help us grow as disciples and live as disciples, while we wait for Jesus to come back in glory. Why not give it a try?
