The End Is Nigh…

November 21, 2016

The end is nigh… at least the end of our big anniversary year (yes, our church turned 200 this year!). We’ve seen a lot of different events, the final one being last week’s “talent show” which saw an interesting mixture of (mainly humorous) contributions.

But beyond the excitement, the mission of the church remains exactly the same as ever: to proclaim the gospel and to demonstrate the love of God in word and deed. Whether it’s Remembrance or Christmas or a very ordinary Sunday morning, one main reason we gather as a church is to celebrate what God has done in Jesus. We remember his sacrifice for us, we celebrate his birth (even if we don’t know the exact date), we proclaim his victory over the forces of evil, and we aim to bless each other through teaching, prayer and the exercise of the gifts the Holy Spirit has given us.

Paul said that each one should be prepared to contribute to the worship and ministry of the church (1 Cor 14:26), and I’d like to keep this challenge before our eyes for a while. What is your contribution? Do you have a gift – whether natural or supernatural – that you could use when the church gets together, for the glory of God?

Remember: in church there are no super-Christian, only disciples with different gifts and talents, and the Holy Spirit wants us to use those gifts for the benefit of the church and the Kingdom of God. It might be scary, and you might have to step out of your comfort zone – but then again, following Jesus is in itself a step into the unknown, sacrificing self and choosing to live for a different Kingdom. Pray about it! Because you can be sure that if you do, your unique ministry will be a real blessing to your fellow believers.
